When there is a new suggestion made, being in a work situation, a home situation or a school situation, everybody response differently. Edward DeBono (1999) did research about this and came to the conclusion there were six different response that could be deducted. He called this different approaches different hats. Some people generally response out of an emotional or intuitive reaction and other just give an theory based response. Although you might differ according to what situation you are in, you can be sorted into one of the six hats he describes.
But this also means, that whenever you do a proposition yourself you have to consider all of these hats. Because they will all be there when you do a proposition. You probably recognize some of your fellow students / coworkers or friends in these hats. But in what hat do you recognize yourself.

For me personally it depends on the situation or role I am in. When I am following a class I usually take on the white hat and the black hat. I want to hear the facts and the theory behind it and can be very critically of it. When I am in the school where I am doing my internship I am more viewed as wearing the yellow and green hat. I am always positive about ideas, eager to learn and trying to find new ways to make something work if I think something is a good idea. But when I am among friends or at home to mostly know me as wearing the red hat. Responding from my emotion and intuition. This doesn’t mean I am a schizophrenic person or have a split personality. It just means I adjust to the situation and the role I have there.
Personally I believe it is a good thing, being able to switch between the different hats. It means you can view a topic from different angles and when you do a suggestion you are aware of people responding in different ways.
These weeks I have been focusing on the use of technology during lessons. When I started I could be viewed as someone wearing a black hat. I was and still am very critical about using new technology during classes. I do believe it should be playing a bigger part in our education, but we have to implement it in the right way. It should not always be just about using a cool internet tool, but be about teaching the children. You can teach them how to responsibly use a tool or just use the tool to learn them about something else.
The project I am doing in my class is an example. I am using Prowise, Skype, Word and Weebly to teach them about using the internet in a responsible way, learning about the world they live in, learning English, learning how to process information and reproducing it in a different way, develop 21st century skills but also what it can mean to be a part of this international world. So I am actually using technology in the two ways I think they should be used; to learn children how they can and should use it and to teach them other skills and knowledge.
To be able to do this project in my class I had to convince my mentors and the school board. They had never done a project like this in the school and I had to get permission . I chose to first convince my mentors to do the project because they would be able to help me convince the board if they would be hesitant. When it comes to technology my mentors are usually wearing a black hat. They are very critical about it. Firstly because they are not to using technology themselves and don’t feel confident using it and secondly because they are afraid it would only take up time they need for other subjects. Expecting them to be critical actually helped me trying to make this project as good as I could make it, I had to found it on theory and show them what the children could learn from it to convince them. This really forced me to think about the project and what I wanted the children to learn and what wo be the best way to teach it. When I actually did the proposition of the project, both of them surprised me by responding wearing a yellow hat. They were immediately excited and gave me all their support and time I needed to do the project.
Now I had to take the second hurdle; the school board or in this case the person who oversees all the interns and the directress. When I went to talk them they were also really excited about it, but they did have some critical questions, which I could answer because I was prepared and did my research. The result was all the colleagues are excited about the project and support me in realizing it. They want to write about it in the newsletter and post picture of it on Twitter.
What I want to say is what I started this blog with. People respond in different ways to a situation or proposition. In order to be prepared when you have your own proposition to make you have to consider the different responses you might get, so you have a well founded proposition and are able to answer different questions and argument why you want or don’t want to realize something.
